Housatonic with HRCKC

Another great trip led by Bob Rancan. Really beautiful country which is the biggest reason I’m posting this. With him mountains all around it’s the prettiest river I’ve  floating within driving distance.

Originally Bob had planned to lead a trip on the Shepaug, but lower water moved the trip for Bob’s annual escape from the traditional start of trout season in our home state of New Jersey so you don’t want to be on Jersey rivers with a group trip. Flow was about 500 cfs at Falls Village . The record low flow for April 7th made things a bit scratchy but eliminated the big waves and trickier moves….or at least those that happened fast. March for Justice

It’s not a black issue, it’s a justice issue.crowd at central and union.

Actually felt proud of Hackensack…a beautiful spring evening. About four hundred people from various organizations participate in a march of “Justice and Solidarity” for Trayvon Martin in Hackensack. The event is being held on the 44th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

And the photographer was even caught on camera himself…http://northjersey.mycapture.com/mycapture/enlarge.asp?image=41104559 . That’s me at far left, though the Record photographer (who is probably better) had the better shot, getting faces as well as the church in the background. Continue reading

Terpsichoreans

As a news photographer and occasional New York City visitor I see a lot of ‘art’. As a photographer, I’m usually more caught up in catching the look and feel of an event and searching for an interesting an unique look then in the event itself, but once in a while I am really impressed.

The Terpsichoreans  impressed me. Not the incredable athleticism of ballet, but for a variety of looks, a lot of kids up on stage having fun, a variety of music, an enthusiastic crowd (so much more fun then the’ glare if you drop a lens cap classical crowd’).

Hope the pictures speak for themselves. And hope you’ll make their next event.

New York City

Sea of yellow in park transverse

A portfolio of shots around New York City over the last several years….from Christo’s Gates (which I abused for my often acclaimed business cards and website header) to interesting street scapes to the laziest of pictures….the view of the city from the palatial TomHartPhoto world headquarters (and needless to say, this view is one of the main reasons the headquarters is where it is as beautiful as downtown Hackensack is).

Hope you enjoy them, get insprired to shoot some of your own

Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration

Singing of 'We Shall Overcome'

Singing of 'We Shall Overcome'

One of those events where you come away inspired. Inspired by how far we as a people have come, inspired by how far we still have to go, inspired by beautiful music….inspired by the event ending with everyone holding hands and singing we shall overcome someday!

At the beautiful Central Unitarian Church in Paramus with most of the county luminaries, a great keynote speech…first Theordora Smiley Lacey, former Teaneck teacher and civil rights activist spoke about growing up in Montgomery Alabama, knowing and working with Dr. King, and then being involved in the struggle in Bergen County to integrate the Teaneck schools. Then her son, Clinton Lacey, deputy Commissioner of the NYC Department of Correction brought home how the struggle is far from over. Others spoke up including Continue reading

Doing Good for Thanksgiving

Maybe not the most exciting shoots, but the weekend before thanksgiving I shot a couple of groups trying to do good.

Goody Bags for the Troops was putting together decorated paper bags to send to the troops overseas. Congressman Scott Garrett showed up and worked along side the volunteers (which is more then you can say for this photographer).

The Annual River Edge Turkey drive at St. Peter’s RC church collected a phenomenal amount of food. Kudos to all the people from the parish and community who dropped of food.  Continue reading

County Group XC Championships

Bergen County 2011 High School Group Cross Country Running championships at Darlington County Park in Mahwah.

As a runner in my past life I’d wanted to shoot cross country for sometime….arrived a bit late for the top boys race…Darlington is a big place and the start finish area was in the back with no parking all too close. Took me a couple of races to get the good vantage so most of the good shots are of the girls ‘b’ race (big schools) and some from the girls ‘a’ (awfully big schools).

One thing my coach always did was have folks at end of the race with Gatorade and a shoulder to help us out. Virtually none of these girls had help and a lot could have used it. So thanks, coach Griffith.

Hilary Duff book Signing

I really had no idea what a big deal this would be. My editor at North Jersey Media said it shouldn’t take me more then a few minutes like a typical book signing. Couple shots of the author, try to get them to interact with an interesting customer, shoot the owner of Books and Greetings, Ken Sarfin,  with the author, move onto the next shoot. I guess that her name actually rang a bell should have tipped me off.

When I arrived it took me more then a few minutes to park. The lines was hundreds of Hillary Duff at Books and Greetings in Northvale NJ.

Birds

Not quite National Geographic, but birds are beautiful, fascintating creatures and getting better bird shots has become a passion. From the Hackensack River literally in our front yard to further afield….this is the photography  I am passionate about.

This is a somewhat varied portfolio from some classic and stunning shots to the interesting…like the bald eagle catching a fish on the  Hackensack taken from quite a distance in failing winter evening light (they skim their massive talons just below the surface as the skim just above it to spear or grab an unwary fish).

Hackensack Street Fair

Rocking to the music of Spanish Harlem - Mayor Jorge E. Meneses.

Rocking to Spanish Harlem Orchestra Mayor Meneses.

For those of you that don’t know, Hackensack is somewhat past it’s glory. Apperently back in the day before the the shopping mall Hack was the place to go and folks who grew up around here in the 50’s recall shopping trips to Hackensack from such prosiac places as Ridgewood or Glen Rock as one of the highlights of their youth.

Still, I love being in Hackensack…convenient to the city and the woods, good transit, the beautiful river nearby (and spread out from the studio windows).

So it was good to see Hackensack’s Main Street as a bustling place to be once more… and it was a very friendly and very mixed crowd.
